Overwater Bungalow Resorts: The Best by Destination and Budget

An overwater bungalow is a room built on stilts over a lagoon or the sea. Every resort here sells one on its own website, and we say whether it has a private pool, a glass floor or steps into the water, and who is allowed to stay in it.

The Short Answer

For the classic overwater bungalow, go to Bora Bora or the Maldives. Our overall pick is Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, whose plunge-pool overwater suites face Mount Otemanu, have ladders from the deck into the lagoon and sleep up to six, so it works for honeymooners and families alike.

  • Most choice at every budget: the Maldives, from simple Embudu Village to Baros and the Conrad, with many all-inclusive plans. See our Maldives guide.
  • Shortest trip from the US: Palafitos in Mexico's Riviera Maya, an adults-only resort, is about 40 minutes from Cancun airport, and Belize City is 2 to 3 hours from Miami, Houston, Dallas and Atlanta. See overwater bungalows closest to the US.
  • All-inclusive: Palafitos (adults only), Royalton CHIC Antigua and Lily Beach in the Maldives include meals and drinks on every stay. See our all-inclusive guide.
  • On a budget: Lexis Hibiscus in Malaysia gives every water villa its own pool, and Bocas del Toro in Panama has simple overwater lodges. See affordable overwater bungalows.

Private Pool, Glass Floor or Ladder: What the Words Mean

Resorts use different names for a room on stilts over the water: overwater bungalow, water villa, bure (the Fijian word), palafito (the Spanish word, used in Mexico and Panama) or overwater cabana. What matters is what comes with the room:

  • Private pool: a plunge pool on your own deck. It is common in the Maldives, where every overwater villa at Siyam World and Soneva Jani has one, but in Bora Bora it is usually limited to certain categories, such as the Four Seasons plunge-pool suites or 62 rooms at the Westin.
  • Glass floor: a glass panel in the floor for watching fish. The St. Regis Bora Bora, Hilton Moorea, the adults-only Palafitos in Mexico and Lina Point in Belize have them; some resorts offer only a glass-top table, as at InterContinental Le Moana.
  • Steps or a ladder: lets you swim straight from the deck. Not every overwater room has one: Le Tikehau's standard bungalows have no direct lagoon access, and at Pangkor Laut in Malaysia swimming from the villas isn't allowed.
  • End of pontoon: the bungalows farthest out on the jetty. They have the most open views and the longest walk to the restaurants.

What to Check Before You Book

  • Who can stay. Many overwater rooms have age limits even at family resorts. Fiji Marriott Momi Bay's over-water bures are for adults 18 and over, the Conrad Maldives' pool water villas are recommended for ages 16 and up, and Pangkor Laut's Sea Villas take guests 12 and over. See our family guide.
  • How many people fit. A lot of overwater rooms take two adults and one child at most, and some resorts count children 12 and over as adults.
  • The transfer. In the Maldives, seaplanes fly only in daylight, and transfers are often compulsory and can cost several hundred dollars per adult, so check the resort's transfer page before booking. Resorts near Malé reached by speedboat avoid both problems.
  • Closures. InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa closed on June 1, 2026 for a full renovation, Sofitel Bora Bora Marara Beach and Rangiroa's Kia Ora Resort are closed, and Sandals' two Jamaican overwater resorts reopen on November 18 and December 18, 2026.

When to Go

  • French Polynesia: the dry season runs from May to October and the wet season from November to April, according to Tahiti Tourisme. Humpback whales visit from about August to November.
  • Maldives: Lily Beach puts the high season at November to April, with the most reliable weather from February to April. May to October is the low season, with more chance of rain.
  • Fiji: the wet season runs from December to April.
  • Caribbean, Mexico and Central America: the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October.
